Thank you to the fantastic pie makers

Three cheers for everyone at Maker Faire, O'Reilly, Centre for Life and all you pie makers who took part for turning D.I.Y Pie 2 into a real success. Hilary and I both had a fantastic time and it was great too see so much enthusiasm for painted pie crusts and pies-on-sticks. A really big thank you to our fantastic science fair helpers, we couldn't of done it with out you.

More pictures and pie chart results to follow!

Pies on the go....

...To Newcastle Science Festival. Just about to Load up the car and make our way from Edinburgh to Newcastle, this year we've got 2 ovens, a sewing machine, loads of signs, a ton of pastry and we can't wait to get making. Hope to see you there.

We don't just eat pies, for yesterdays breakfast we had pancake-cake- delicious.

Pie club - the first sitting

Last night was an epic night of cooking, eating, drinking and laughing. I hosted the first DIY pie club of 2011 (and first ever DIY pie club) and I'm feeling super pie enthusiastic and keen to keep the pie making up.

Pie course 1- Homity Pie from the cranks cook book, with a peanut butter base.

Pie course 2 - Caramelised garlic tart, recipe from Ottolengi. Absolutely delicious!

Newcastle Science Festival 2011

The new website is up and running for Newcastle science festival, where Hilary and I are delighted to have been asked back to Maker Faire to present DIY PIE 2 -the return of the pie..... (or something like that).
Hope that some of you will be able to make it along on the 12th & 13th of March. It's sure to be a real cracker.

Pie roulette- eating for the indecisive

Here's some pictures from Friday's very sunny Dundonian Y'n'Y launch- before it all got munched. Thanks to everyone who could make it along, and to Gayle et al and the Hannah Maclure centre for having us.

PIE MAGS are us!!

No wonder little Johnnie pie face is looking so pleased with him self. He's cover star of our limited edition DIY pie manual that we'll be giving away at Maker Faire.
Yip yip yippee, I glad this is ticked off the list, now it's time to get cracking on the pastry making preparations.

pie testing

It sort of looks like writing with blobby felt tip pens, I kind of like it. Before and after baking pictures. And no I can't spell consideration.

old school pie

From Mrs Beeton's 'All about cookery', very nice.

Hot water pastry

This stuff is great, really pliable and you can model it a bit like clay, it would be great to make some moulds to try it in. I've been trying it with tin mugs, tiny jam jars, and free-forming, but haven't even scratched the surface. This is the pastry that is used for scotch pies and those epicvictorian raised pies.....

Edible knits2- Puff

Not as easily as I was hoping, it never is with knitting, the pastry kept drying out and is really stretchy, I had to put in the freezer for a while to moisten it up again. Not sure what flavour pie should have a knitted pie crust....any ideas?

tested puff

As promised here's the bake off between home-made and shop-bought, can you spot the difference? I could taste it. Hearts are mine, stars are courtsey of Jus-Rol, definitely more salt. From one of my team of professional tasters the hearts were "lighter, with out being brittle", ha ha I think I'm on to a winner.
